False ceiling design in Bangalore

One clean recess, a cove where the light needs it, and a ceiling that carries the air-conditioning and the wiring without announcing it — not four tiers of gypsum.

Soft minimalist bedroom with a plain chalk plaster ceiling, a linen drum pendant, handle-less oak wardrobes and a travertine headboard ledge with nickel sconces, designed by Élara & Co.
What Is Designed

The four ceilings that still look right

  • The Plain Plaster Ceiling

No drop at all: the slab skimmed flat, spots or a pendant, and the height kept. In a room with nothing to hide it is the best ceiling there is, and the cheapest.

  • The Single Recess

One clean drop with a cove that washes light across the ceiling and back into the room — proportioned to the room, lit once, never stepped twice.

  • The Working Ceiling

The drop only where the air-conditioning duct and the wiring run, usually along one wall, with the rest of the room kept at full height — a ceiling that earns its inches.

  • The Timber Ceiling

Oak or teak battens on a plaster ground, lit from a cove at the edge: the one ceiling that is a finish in its own right, for the room that deserves it.

  • Gyproc on a Grid, Wired First

Saint-Gobain Gyproc board on a galvanised grid, with every spot, strip, sensor and driver wired and tested before it closes — and access left where the AC will one day need it.

  • Height, Fans and the Bangalore Flat

Most apartments here are handed over at about ten feet. A drop of more than four to six inches makes a room feel low, so the drop is kept to the run that carries the services and the fans stay on the slab.

Why It Is Done This Way

A ceiling is for the light, and for what it hides

Priced as Drawn

A plain plaster ceiling is about ₹95 – 140 a square foot; one with a cove and a step ₹120 – 200; a plaster cornice on its own ₹120 – 220 a running foot. A ceiling is a line on the quote with a quantity against it, never a lump sum.

Wired Before It Closes

Every light, strip, driver and sensor is placed on the drawing, wired, tested and photographed before the board goes on — the check that saves a ceiling from being opened again in a year.

Every Line Named

The proposal lists the joinery, the wall finish, the ceiling, the lighting and the curtains as separate lines, each with brand, grade and warranty, so the room can be compared quote to quote rather than by its total.

Considered Questions

Before you begin

What does a false ceiling cost in Bangalore?
About ₹95 – 140 a square foot for a plain Gyproc ceiling, ₹120 – 200 with coves and steps, and ₹120 – 220 a running foot for a plaster cornice on its own — the lighting inside it priced as its own line. A working ceiling that drops only along the AC run costs a fraction of one that drops the whole room, and looks better for it. Ceilings are designed within whole-home projects, which begin from ₹11.99L.
Do I need a false ceiling at all?
Only where there is something to hide — a duct, a cluster of wiring, a beam — or where a cove is the light the room wants. A room with neither is better with its plaster skimmed flat and its full height kept; a false ceiling is a tool, not a finish that every room requires.
Which false ceiling for a hall with two fans?
Keep the fans on the slab with a plain plaster ceiling around them, and drop the ceiling only along the wall that carries the air-conditioning and its wiring. A fan hung from a dropped gypsum ceiling needs a hook to the slab and a boxed cut-out, and two of them turn a ceiling into a diagram.
How much height does a false ceiling take?
Four to six inches for a plain drop with spots; more where a duct runs through it. In a Bangalore apartment handed over at about ten feet, that is the difference between a room that feels generous and one that feels pressed — which is why the drop is kept to the run that needs it.
Gypsum board or POP?
Gypsum board — Saint-Gobain Gyproc on a galvanised grid — for a flat, crack-free ceiling that goes up dry and takes paint cleanly. Plaster of Paris is kept for what it is good at: a cornice, a cove profile, a curve, moulded rather than boarded.
